The Fitnessgram test is administered to all students in Grades 1 through 12 at all schools in GA and most states. The goals of the program is to track and improve the fitness levels of all children. In grades 1 to 3, the state requires a measurement of height and weight to give a rough estimate of the child's Body Mass Index. In grades 4 to 12, students also have to run a fitness test (1 mile or pacer test), a curl up (sit-up) test, a push up test and a flexibility test.
This tracking of results has enabled Georgia to improve and move up 10 places in the State rankings for childhood obesity levels and students who fall within the healthy fitness zone.
The Body Mass Index is a estimate to calculate low, healthy and overweight children and adults and is not always as straight forward as it seems. Being in a health zone for weight, also doesn't mean you are healthy. Aerobic fitness, core strength and flexibility are also good indicators of a child's fitness level and most students will do better in one area or another.
