The P.E. Curriculum
At the Museum School the teachers collaborate to ensure an all round education for every student. PE is not just about sports and we realize that not everyone enjoys playing a sport, but they do need to exercise and stay healthy. PE is more than just hitting National or State standards, it is about helping set healthy exercise patterns for life, reinforcing the schools core values, and integrating other subjects they are learning into the gym or out on the field. Some examples of this are:
We are excited to bring a new curriculum to PE from the University of Heidelberg in Germany. Ballschule ("Ball School) was developed in 1999 to recreate the environment of free play and the creativity that is associated with it. Students are required to come up with the solutions themselves as well as develop key spatial awareness and bodily coordination. Games that include key motor skill development as well as brain centered coaching rewards the cognitive student as much as the athletic student. Students are posed challenges in various environments with different types of equipment where they need to cooperate, coach and support each other to be successful.

- Kindergarten will learn about gravity, so this will be used in games in PE so students get a visual and kinesthetic experience.
- 1st grade will study forces, levers and pushing and pulling, so this will be incorporated into the PE activities during that unit.
- 2nd grade study the life cycle of stars. In PE the students will compete as two teams (average vs massive star) in a battle of gravity vs pressure to determine if the star goes supernova or becomes a red giant.
- Third graders will learn about Ancient Greece in their homeroom and produce work for Exhibit night. In PE, we integrate this by competing in the Ancient Greek Pentathlon.
- Fourth grade will study the weather. We will use volleyball to demonstrate how hail is formed in the cloud by keeping the ball up in the air
- Fifth grade studies Taxonomy so we will play tribal games between Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens.
- In sixth grade the students will learn how to coach their peers through a warm-up and introductory game of a sport of their choice. We are doing this to develop their leadership and presentation skills, as well improving confidence and lowering stress levels through physical actions.
